Every SDET Should Learn in 2025

If you're planning to become an SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) in 2025, you're on the right path. With companies demanding faster releases and higher quality, automation is more important than ever. But with so many tools available, it can be confusing to know where to start. Don't worry, I've got your back!

In this article, I’ll walk you through the top 10 automation tools that every SDET should consider learning in 2025. Whether you're from a manual testing background or just starting fresh, these tools are must-haves in your toolkit. And trust me, I’ve been on that late-night learning journey too – typing in code with one hand and holding chai in the other!

1. Selenium

One of the most frequently employed tools for handling browser automation. Selenium is an open-source project that can be used with various languages, including Java, Python and C#. It is an excellent choice for web application testing and works smoothly with several tools.

What are the reasons to learn it? The majority of companies still choose Selenium for their automation tasks. Moreover, it’s simple for new users and has lots of learning support.

2. TestNG

If Java is being used with Selenium, then TestNG is the way to go. It supports you in arranging your tests, deciding on their importance and creating reports.

Tip: I used to have one class for all my test cases until I discovered the annotation tools @BeforeMethod and @Test. It became much simpler to live after that.

3. Postman

Modern applications rely heavily on APIs. You can use Postman to manually test APIs, view their responses and also run basic tests automatically.

Best part? It doesn’t cost anything and the interface is very easy to use. Coming from a programming background is unnecessary.

4. Rest Assured

After you become practiced to Postman, start using Rest Assured. It is a Java library designed to execute automated API tests quickly. You may write test scripts and use them inside your test framework.

Real talk: I once spent two whole days trying to get Rest Assured working in my Maven project. But as soon as I got the hang of it, API automation became very simple.

5. Git & GitHub

Every software professional should rely on version control. Git helps you follow the updates in your code and GitHub gives you the ability to team up with others.

Why important? Imagine all your efforts were lost because the computer crashed and you could not save the script. All of your data is backed up and documented with Git.

6. Jenkins

This is your go-to tool for continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD). With Jenkins, you don’t have to test manually after every change as the tool does it automatically.

Pro tip: First, set up basic job creation and afterward, link your test framework and GitHub to it.

7. Cucumber

Cucumber uses simple English structured using Gherkin language for writing test cases. It brings technical and non-technical people together.

Use case: It is helpful when your product managers or business analysts want to learn or even draft test scenarios.

8. Docker

You can put your application and its environment into a container using Docker. It ensures that your tests produce the same results on any machine.

Don't worry If it seems like the solution is complicated, that’s okay. I shared the same opinion at first. The moment I realized my tests ran the same way on all machines, I was completely confident.

9. Playwright

Playwright is the upcoming player, bringing efficient and reliable browser automation to the table. You can use CSS with several kinds of browsers and many programming languages such as JavaScript and Python.

Why switch? An increasing number of teams are switching to Playwright instead of Selenium for their web testing needs. Give it a try and see if it suits your needs.

10. Allure Reports

Creating a good test report is the perfect way to round out the project. Allure produces reports that are visually pleasing and contain all the necessary details.

Fun fact: Since I moved to Allure, my manager actually looks at our test reports.

Final Thoughts

Following in 2025, I consider these the top 10 automation tools that every SDET should know. Don’t set out to learn everything in a single go. Choose just one or two tools, learn them gradually and feel yourself gaining assurance. I advise first getting familiar with Java, Selenium and TestNG and continue with the others only as required. Also, I wrote another blog regarding an SDET study plan for 4 weeks.

If you think this information is helpful, feel free to share it with those around you. Until we meet again, carry on testing and sipping your chai!
